When Michelle walked into the police station, a cuffed prostitute was yelling at a cop. Michelle gave the woman a wide berth as she looked for Bruce. She didn’t see him around and decided to leave the cookies on his desk. She had set them down and was about to take off when she spotted Alex.

“I baked some cookies for Bruce,” Michelle told him. “Figured I’d drop them off in person. Is he here?”

“No, he’s not. But I can give them to him and let him know you stopped by.” Alex opened the tin and looked inside. “Can I steal one?”

“I don’t see why not.”

Alex pulled two cookies from the tin before setting it on Bruce’s desk. “Follow me,” he said. “I want to give you an update about the case.”

Michelle trailed her brother-in-law, eager to hear what he had to say. When they got to his office, he shut the door, and she took a seat. She waited while he ate a cookie and took a swig of soda to wash it down.

“Man. Those are good. I hope there are some left when Bruce gets back.”

Michelle made a face, and Alex laughed.

“What’s going on with the investigation?” Michelle asked, dying to know.

Alex brushed cookie crumbs off his green metal desk. “I found out where Olga works.”

Michelle raised an eyebrow. “And?”

“She cleans houses. She works for the company Paige used to clean our house when she was pregnant.”

Michelle’s jaw dropped. “That’s why she looks familiar. Because she’s been to your house.”
